CASE STUDY 4

How solutions to EMC legislation can be met in a timely and inexpensive manner, leading to increased sales for our Client.

helicopters

Problem:

Client ‘D’, a fledgling OEM supplying LCD displays to the aircraft industry, was experiencing problems meeting EMC regulations, with their first design. During testing in a helicopter, it was discovered that the LCD display could not be operated in the aircraft without it blocking or interfering with the signals of all other communications equipment on-board. This was obviously unacceptable and the unit was taken to an EMC Test House, where it failed across the board. The Client sought our help and expertise in this area.

Solution:

After running several of our own tests, we discovered that the DC-DC power supplies in the unit, and the fact that no filtering was in place, caused the problems. A small PCB was designed to provide the necessary filtering and incorporated into the unit. A few minor adjustments were also made to the circuitry of the existing design.

Result:

The display was then re-tested for EMC and passed with ‘flying colours’. Since that time, this Client has been able to sell his newly improved LCD displays to the aircraft industry and has placed most of his new design work with us.
